School History

Shortly after the Mormon pioneers settled Morgan Valley, four educational districts were established throughout the valley. Forty-five years later the district was consolidated to a single district.

The early beginning of the high school education included an eighth grade education. It was housed in the county courthouse. The curriculum included theology, the New Testament and Book of Mormon, grammar and composition, arithmetic, geography, bookkeeping, penmanship, and music.

The first high school building was built in 1911. The first class had 22 students. Four years later, under the supervision of H.B. Fry, the construction of the M on the hill above the high school began. What was known as “M” Day became an annual tradition as each class made a trek to whitewash the letter and cement a section of rocks to give the project permanency. The cementing was completed in 1953, but the annual cleaning, whitewashing, and face lifting is still observed each year.

During the early years of the twentieth century, the Transcontinental Railroad intersected the valley. It was not until the completion of the Interstate highway (I-84) in the early 1960’s that there was an influx of new residents. This impact of growth encouraged a need for a new building. The completion of this new building was in 1965.

There have been three additions on the high school since its original construction. These additions have added several classrooms, a new commons area, central offices, a counseling center, a new fine arts area, and renovation of the media center and science rooms.
Today, under the leadership of Principal Kenneth G. Adams and Vice Principal Renn Hoopes, the school employs 90 faculty and staff members. Curriculum ranges from welding and cooking to calculus and college humanities courses. The institution serves more than 670 students who are involved in the pursuit of scholastic excellence and extracurricular prowess.
Morgan High School is steeped in tradition. From the foresight of the original pioneers to today’s explorers of technology, the people of the valley have a deep belief in the value of public education. They understand the need to prepare upcoming generations for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
